Silicon Valley
Gay Men's Chorus - expands its ranks to over
Biggest
Recruiting Numbers in over 10 years.
The Silicon
Valley Gay Men's Chorus has completed it's mid-season recruiting drive and
starts
rehearsing for
our spring concert "HeartSong - Evolution Beyond the Union of Two"
with 17
new singers, plus
several returning singers for a total of 52 voices. This recruitment drive is
off
the heels of a
record breaking concert attendance for the holiday show in December.
"While
other arts groups
are struggling, our chorus attendance has been going steadily up for the last 4
concerts. I think
it's attracting a new caliber of singers that want to sing with a chorus that
looks
like they are
having fun on stage" says Dan England, Director of Marketing for the
chorus.
This upcoming
show is only Artistic Director Jonathan Ulrich's second concert with the
chorus.
"I wanted to
give singers who didn't know me a chance to audition right after our first
show. I
was delighted to
see so many men standing in line to audition when the doors opened this
January. It's
also heartwarming to see chorus alumni who have sung with SVGMC in the past
want to return to
our family." says Jonathan.
One of those
singers Dan Harris sang with the chorus 6 years ago. His partner Bill has been
singing with the
chorus for over 10 years. "I returned because I was looking to reconnect
with a
talented group of
men who have fun entertaining an audience." says Mr. Harris. He continues,
"I
delight in again
being part of something that reflects such positive aspects both for the
individual
and the greater
community."
Jeff Tucker has
long been associated as a patron, supporter and occasional singer in the
chorus.
Like Dan, he
decided to rejoin the chorus this season. "SVGMC meets my need to belong
to a
fun ensemble that
doesn’t forfeit good musicianship and for the opportunity to build quality
interpersonal relationships." says Jeff.
"The chorus
barely fits in the rehearsal space, which is a wonderful problem to have."
continues
Jon. "We'll
make room. The next opportunity to audition for the chorus is in the
fall."
The chorus has
grown to a size that forming an ensemble group within the chorus has become a
key goal of the
board of directors. This ensemble group will be conducted by a new Associate
Artistic
Director, and will likely perform at GLBT community related events like
baseball season
kickoffs, GLBT
flag raising ceremonies, church appearances and other pay for performance
opportunities.
The chorus is actively recruiting and interviewing candidates for this paid
position.
